Parents, students and members of the community rallied in Williamsburg Tuesday calling for Queen of the Rosary Catholic Academy to remain open.
The academy is one of six in Brooklyn and Queens that are expected to close as a result of financial strain caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Diocese of Brooklyn’s Office of the Superintendent Catholic School Support Services announced the closures last week – effective Aug. 31.
They say the schools have seen a decline in enrollment over the last five years but that the registration totals for the upcoming school year are down significantly as a result of the pandemic, with more than $600,000 in tuition bills for the past school year still outstanding.
However, families say the school is like a second home and are calling on the Diocese of Brooklyn for answers.
Parents tell News 12 they should have received more notice about the closure and should have also been brought in to help save the school.
Saint Gregory the Great in the Crown Heights and Flatbush sections of Brooklyn is also expected to close as of Aug. 31.
News 12 reached out to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn and has not heard back yet.
