Red Cross offers smoke detectors after fires
After several fires left four people dead in the Bronx last weekend, the American Red Cross hit the streets to help residents get free smoke detectors.
The program distributes the devices and installs them at no charge. Residents just need to sign up.
Fire officials say 70 percent of fatal house fires occur where there are no working smoke detectors.
Red Cross volunteers say an average of seven people die daily in house fires in the United States.
