A nonprofit gallery hosted a pop-up shop that sold designer fabrics, leather and trim at thrift-store prices on Saturday.

BronxArtSpace hosted FABSCRAP, an organization that sells materials that would normally be discarded and sent to a landfill. The effort is part of the Department of Sanitation's 'Refashion Week,' says Eszter Csicsai, the senior manager of reuse and donations for DSNY.

Refashion Week is about reducing textile waste and making fashion sustainable, Csicsai says. Discarded clothes, shoes and accessories make up six percent of New York City's residential waste stream, she adds. Over 200,000 tons of fabric wind up in a landfill -- a collection large enough to rival the height of the Empire State Building, she says.

The DSNY's Donate NYC program was able to divert more than 98 million pounds of items from landfills last year, she says, which had the environmental impact of keeping 37,000 cars off the road for a year.
