Rep. Ocasio-Cortez goes mobile, urges action to address Bronx housing woes
In one of several mobile office meetings, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke with Bronx residents at Westchester Square Public Library about rising housing costs.
The freshman Democrat shook hands and spoke with constituents at the temporary location. The topic of affordable housing and skyrocketing rent was a main concern.
Dante Gonzalez was among those in attendance. He is a college student who lives with his mother and says his new lease is requiring another $500 in rent per month.
"Hopefully the congresswoman can highlight the housing issue in the Bronx and finds ways to fix it," says Gonzalez.
Ocasio-Cortez urged concerned attendees to take action by putting pressure on local state representatives.
"There are two bills in the Assembly and the state Senate that could fix a lot of the runaway rent crisis going on," says Ocasio-Cortez. "We need people to call their state members. "
Ocasio-Cortez says she plans to be part of a town hall meeting in the upcoming weeks to discuss what she says is a housing crisis in the city.
