Residents living on St. Lawrence Avenue in Soundview say their street is overrun with garbage and that nothing is being done about it.
The street's dead end is lined with trash that includes empty bottles and pizza boxes. Residents say they've been trying for decades to have something done, forcing them to cut down the weeds and pick up the garbage themselves. Now, though, they say they're getting too old to put in the physical labor, not to mention that it shouldn't be their responsibility.
Rodney Brown says the city Department of Sanitation told him that the property was the Department of Transportation's responsibility. Despite him reaching out to the DOT and other public officials, he says the effort has proved futile.
Brown says he even received a summons from DSNY in 2009 demanding that he clean up the mess. He never heard back after responding that it wasn't his property.
A DSNY spokesperson says the agency is looking into the issue to see what can be done. News 12 also reached out to the DOT and is waiting to hear back.
