Residents: Debris falls from elevated 6 line
People who live and work near an elevated 6 train subway line in Parkchester say metal debris is falling from that structure.
The most recent debris fell Thursday night near Pugsley and Westchester avenues, and another piece came crashing down last week, they say. A Bx4 bus stop is below, potentially putting commuters and pedestrians in harm's way.
Phillip Figarro says one extra step could have ended his life because falling debris was "just inches" from hitting him in the head. The debris landed near his feet.
"Somebody is going to die," worries community advocate Sheik Musa Drammah. He says it is a matter of when, not if someone will be injured.
Residents have collected a bucket of fallen nuts, bolts and more over the past few years, he says. According to Drammah, the MTA didn't act on numerous calls he made.
In a statement, the MTA says crews have tightened loose track components and installed baskets to catch debris. "The age of these tracks has played a role in the loose components. We will be installing new track panels starting Sept. 12 that will permanently resolve the situation."
