Roads became increasingly dangerous Wednesday as snow showers ramped up during the nor'easter.

Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke at a news conference Wednesday and said it was a tough decision to keep New York City schools open, but that rush hour was going to be the more difficult time to travel.

Thick and wet snow pummeled areas across the city, making for tough and slow travel conditions.

Drivers were urged to use extreme caution, and residents were also urged to keep off the roads if at all possible.

Earlier in the day, teachers and parents were critical of the mayor's decision to keep New York City schools open amid Wednesday's snowstorm.

Some frustrated residents also signed an online petition calling on the mayor to close schools.

The mayor said forecast information was not reliable enough for his administration to close schools.

Department of Sanitation crews were out at Bronx schools Wednesday making sure roadways and walkways were clear for students, parents and teachers to walk and drive on.
