The superintendent of Norwalk's schools sent a letter to ABC executives to request the primetime comedy "American Housewife" stop "demeaning" the city.
Stephen Adamowski has a problem with the show's jabs at his city and students.
"American Housewife" is set in the neighboring town of Westport, and Adamowski says its depiction of Norwalk is "pejorative, demeaning and divisive." He's calling the show a form of bullying.
Andy Ross, a Norwalk native, is also tired of the jokes. He created the website stoptheinsults.com and started a petition calling on the network to leave Norwalk out of its jokes.
One particular instance that Ross mentioned happened in an episode where someone suggested swimming at a public pool in Norwalk.
Everyone cringed and went 'Eww, Norwalk, we won't swim with those people,'" he says,
Then, in a recent Halloween episode, a teen girl went to a party dressed as a Norwalk prom date. Her costume included wearing a balloon under her dress to imply pregnancy.
"In Norwalk, we teach our children from a young age that bullying in any form is not acceptable," Adamowski wrote in his letter. "Yet our high school students in particular now find themselves the target of stereotypes and prejudices on a TV network owned by Disney."
"I'm not sure what the rationale would be for deliberately targeting an entire community instead of creating a fictional one, but I do know it is hurtful and harmful," he continues.
The mayor's office says it plans to contact ABC as well.
