Sen. Charles Schumer pushes for federal law prohibiting trespassing on major bridges & structures
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) is pushing for a federal law to curb trespassing on major bridges and other structures.
It comes after two incidents over the summer involving trespassers who scaled the Brooklyn Bridge.
The bill would make it a federal crime to trespass on critical infrastructure, punishable by up to five years in prison. Under current New York City laws, such crimes are punishable by up to one year depending on the severity of the incident.
Schumer says climbing on bridges and other infrastructure can be dangerous to the climbers, commuters and responding crews. He says he hopes to see the bill passed by March of next year.
In July, two artists claimed responsibility for replacing two American flags atop the Brooklyn Bridge with white flags. The following month, a Russian tourist was arrested after climbing the bridge.
