Sen. Schumer unveils legislation to give transit discounts to college students
Sen. Chuck Schumer unveiled legislation on Thursday that would provide federal funding to transit agencies like the MTA for offering at least a 25 percent discount to college student riders.
The program is called UTRIP, which stands for University Transit Rider Innovation Program.
Schumer says that if passed, the discount would mean students only have to pay about $87 per month instead of the $116.50 it currently costs for a monthly MetroCard.
The program could also be used for public bus fares if approved, Schumer says.
