Snow preparations are underway for what could be a major storm on Long Island.
A blizzard warning is in effect in Suffolk County from 1 a.m. Thursday to 1 a.m. Friday.  A winter storm warning is in effect for Nassau County.
While snow totals can change, residents and officials say they are getting ready.
Officials at the Brookhaven Town Highway Department say timing is everything since there are about 3,500 miles of road to clear.
"To use a sports analogy, that's a game day decision," says Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro. "Literally myself and my administrative staff will be out on the roads. As the storm starts to pick up, we'll watch the radar and the accumulations and bring our staff in accordingly because we need them to have a little bit of prep time, to actually get from their homes to the yard, get the truck started up, get them loaded up and then out on the roads."
Losquadro says it's all about staggering the times the workers come in since the storm is going to be around for several hours, and they are going to need crews to clean up the roads and maintain the roadways as the day progresses.
Across the Island, people are gearing up to dig out of the snow Thursday. But for many parents, they're also ready for their kids to have a possible snow day.
"(My kids) already said they can't wait for a snow day," says East Quogue parent Lauren Brand.
News 12 meteorologists say snow is expected to fall through 5 p.m. Thursday. Snow will be moderate to possibly heavy at times, with 6 to 10 inches expected for Suffolk and 3 to 6 inches for Nassau. Meteorologists say there will be poor visibility and dangerous travel conditions.
