Neighbors of a vacant lot in Soundview say they oppose a plan to turn the property into a two-building complex that would include a 200-bed homeless shelter.
The Samaritan Village group plans to develop the space on Bruckner Boulevard into one building for affordable housing, a health care clinic and a community space. The other will be used for the shelter.
Neighbors say the development will devalue their homes and increase crime in the area.
Samaritan Village defends its proposal as an "innovative model to fund permanent affordable housing, a neighborhood health clinic and housing for the homeless."
Outspoken neighbors appear unconvinced.
"To bring any type of a shelter there is just going to deteriorate the neighborhood," says Deborah Collins.
