An underpass in Soundview may be receiving what some are calling a much-needed facelift.
The City Council is planning to make the underpass between Bruckner Boulevard and Rosedale Avenue more appealing and safer for the community.
Borough lawmakers say the underpass is in need of new lights on both sides. A mural might even be painted on its walls.
Assemblyman Marcos Crespo says he has been talking about cleaning up the area for quite some time. He says he proposed his ideas to the city's Department of Transportation. He wants to start gathering funds for the upgrades as soon as possible.
"We need our folks to feel comfortable, to feel safe in their community," Crespo says. " These conditions are deplorable and they should not be made available to our neighborhood."
Crespo says the project will cost about $800,000.
