State police rescued a bald eagle that was struck by a car and suffered a broken wing on Route 8.

Police say the eagle was struck by a car Wednesday in the southbound lane of Route 8 near Exit 25 around 12:48 p.m.

 

 

Waterbury Animal Control and DEEP officers assisted state police from Troop-I with the rescue.

The bald eagle suffered a fractured left wing and is in stable condition at Audubon Sharon Wildlife Rehab Clinic.

Officials at the clinic said it was the second bald eagle admitted into their care this week.

A rehab specialist said they admitted a large adult male bald eagle suffering seizures. They said they suspected the eagle ingested some kind of toxin. He remains in critical condition.

Police say when Waterbury Animal Control responded to the scene to assist, the frightened eagle began running down an embankment toward the Naugatuck River.

Fortunately, the eagle was caught and transported by DEEP officers.

The eagle was evaluated for surgery and is in stable condition.
