Stony Brook University Hospital rolled out the red carpet for its nurses as they got into work, where they walked under balloon arches.
Stony Brook says the event puts the impact of their commitment, talent and expertise in full view, especially after a tough year on the job.
"That's what this day is all about -- to celebrate what nurses do and recognize them for the importance of the work they do," says Carolyn Santora, Stony Brook University Hospital's chief nursing officer.
National Nurses Day kicks off National Nurses Week.
Meanwhile, Dunkin' and Chipotle are just two of many businesses giving a little extra love to nurses with freebies and discounts.
