Record-breaking travel weekend expected for Fourth of July
A record-breaking amount of drivers is expected to hit the road this weekend in order to get to their Independence Day celebrations.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo is trying to make the drive just a little easier on travelers by limiting road work. Most projects requiring the closure of a lane will be suspended until Tuesday. Projects that don't interfere with traffic will continue.
If you are one of the many that will be driving, it's not a bad time to be doing so, as gas prices are lower than they have been in years. According to GasBuddy.com, the average price is $2.85. Compare that to 2014, when the going rate for a gallon was nearly $4.
Those who do get behind the wheel this weekend are urged to drive responsibly. The police department announced plans to ramp up DWI enforcement throughout the five boroughs, including safety checkpoints.
Safety is also a priority off the roadways. In response to the attack in Turkey, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson announced there will be heightened security though the weekend. In New York, the Port Authority says it is adding heavily armed, high visibility patrols at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports. The TSA is also increasing its presence.
The LIRR will also be running extra trains out to the East End for anyone with their sights on the Hamptons or Montauk.
