New Yorkers reminded to check boilers as weather gets colder

As the weather gets colder, New Yorkers are being reminded to check the safety of their boilers and radiator valves.
The reminder comes in the wake of the deaths of two toddlers in the Bronx who died of hyperthermia and thermal injuries after their radiator malfunctioned.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams says dealing with a boiler is a professional job and not for amateurs. He says something as simple as a valve on your radiator, which allows the steam to come through, should be regularly inspected.
Any dripping coming from the radiator valve means it could be faulty or not installed correctly.
Experts say to also make sure your boiler is in a clean area that is well-ventilated, and not to use boiler rooms as storage areas. It's also important to have a professional ensure that all controls are properly wired.
