BX woman gives back through nature

As part of National Women's History Day, News 12 is shining a spotlight on one local woman who is giving back to the community through nature.
Nilka Martel took a leap of faith and decided to start her own nonprofit organization called Give, which is dedicated to cleaning and preserving natural landmarks and areas in the Bronx like parks, rivers and neighborhoods.
Martel says the mission was sparked after she herself, as a Bronx native, had no idea where the Bronx River really was. Since then, as the founder of Give, she has worked on over a dozen projects over the past five years and partnered as a volunteer on countless cleaning and beautification missions around the borough.
Martel says her main goal has been to educate the youth about the tremendous history in the Bronx that can be told through nature.
Martel and her organization will be starting spring off with a tree planting project at the Bronx River on the Burke Bridge on April 11 at 9:30 a.m. Volunteers are welcome.
