A new traffic project is in the works to improve safety along East Tremont Avenue, which has seen nearly 60 pedestrian injuries during a five-year period, according to Department of Transportation data.

Community Board 10, with input from Westchester Square businesses, voted last week to approve part of a large-scale plan to ease traffic and increase pedestrian access on East Tremont from Williamsbridge Road to Westchester Avenue.

"I think the major part would be the median development," says Lisa Sorin, of the Westchester Square Business Improvement District. Sorin says other work will include the lanes and traffic signals.

According to Sorin, the first phase of the project won't include changing the area near Lehman High School, where a serious car accident happened on March 10. The area surrounding the high school will be part of the next phase of the project.

There is no set timeline for the work, which is expected to begin later this year.

The plan is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's Vision Zero Plan, which aims to end pedestrian-related traffic deaths and injuries.
