Councilman proposes bill to regulate industrial laundry facilities

A report released by Councilman Ritchie Torres describes a dangerously dirty environment inside industrial laundry facilities in and around New York City.
The report shows that serious illnesses have been found in linens sent from restaurants, hotels and hospitals to be cleaned.
Torres proposed the Clean Act to finally regulate the industry.
Miguel Figueroa used to work at B and M Linen Corporation in Hunts Point, one of several plants researched for the report. Figueroa says the odor was overwhelming, and he doesn't remember any inspections to check whether hygiene standards were being met.
Torres says the act will close the loophole allowing laundry facilities to operate without any oversight and in turn put the public's health in danger.
