Mother arrested in Soundview school bus assault

The mother of a boy who allegedly attacked a fellow classmate on a school bus was arrested Friday night.

The incident occurred on May 20 as the school bus stopped at Watson and Noble avenues in Soundview.

Jayden de la Cruz says his attacker repeatedly struck him in the face, giving him a bloody nose. The attack lasted for about three minutes, according to the bus driver.

Police say the alleged attacker's mother, 36-year-old Darlene Peterson, assaulted the bus matron who tried to intervene when she prevented her from boarding the bus. The incident report taken by administrators at Emolior Academy also states that Peterson was yelling at students on the bus and encouraging the violence.

News 12 is told that Peterson faced a judge Saturday morning on charges of misdemeanor assault and child endangerment.
