Mayor de Blasio promises affordable housing in Bronx
More affordable housing is coming to the Bronx as part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's plan to create 200,000 affordable apartments in 10 years.
Construction is currently underway on the the Summit Ridge Apartments. Once the project is completed, there will be 58 units. Mayor de Blasio says they will all be affordable.
The city invested over $600 million to develop 8,500 new apartments throughout the five boroughs. The buildings on Summit Avenue will be available to families that make between $23,000 and $46,000 a year.
The mayor says the units are guaranteed to be affordable for the next 60 years.
"This is what we are doing to make sure that people can stay in the neighborhood they love, in the city they love, that they have helped create and build. This is our commitment. A lot of people were in the lower side of the income level and need help and need affordable units. This is going to reach them," Mayor de Blasio says.
There will be a lottery to decide who will be able to move into the apartments. The lottery will happen when almost all of the construction is completed next year.
