Heat wave hits the Bronx as summer winds down

Officials announced Thursday that Orchard Beach's lifeguard stands will remain staffed through Sept. 13., extending the beach season another week amid a heat wave.
Residents flocked there Thursday, when forecasters predicted a high of 92. The beach had been scheduled to end its season this week.
Elsewhere in the borough, just a few residents visited Soundview Park, braving the stickiness on the hottest day of the current heat wave.
A few ran on the park's new track, despite the surface's temperature reading at 127 degrees.
Relief from the heat will come on Friday as temperatures are expected to top out in the 80s.
