Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday that the New York State Labor Department approved a $15 minimum wage for fast-food workers.

The governor was joined by Vice President Joe Biden at the Javits Center in Manhattan to show support for raising the minimum wage from $8.75 to $15. Gov. Cuomo says the goal is to eventually raise the minimum wage for everyone, not just fast-food workers.

The governor says there is no way to support a family and live a decent life on $8.75 an hour.

Those not in favor of raising the minimum wage say they believe it will actually cause a loss of jobs and hurt the young and less educated workers. However, the governor says he plans to demonstrate New York's success to the rest of the country.

The minimum wage will gradually increase to $15.
