Advocates call for Grand Concourse bike lane

A bicyclists advocacy group is calling for a protected bike lane and dedicated bus lanes on the Grand Concourse.
The roadway is among the city's top 10 percent of crash corridors, according to the city's Department of Transportation.
One of the most dangerous areas on the 5-mile stretch is the intersection with East 170th Street, where officials say seven people were seriously injured and one was killed between 2009 and 2013.
The DOT is currently making upgrades to the Grand Concourse, which advocates say is good, but they say a separate bike line that would exclude cars is necessary for safety.
They also want a designated lane just for buses.
In addition to increasing safety, advocates say the bike lane would encourage residents to be more active.
