NYPD officer responding to gun reports is shot

(AP) - A New York City police officer responding to reports of a man with a gun has been shot and wounded in a gunfight.

The officer has been taken to a hospital. His condition is unknown.

The shooting happened in Manhattan's East Harlem neighborhood on Tuesday night.

Police say another person was found with a gunshot wound to the leg several blocks away. It's unclear if that person is connected to the police officer's shooting. The person's condition is unknown.

A section of a busy parkway has been shut down near where the officer was shot.

Police haven't said what happened to the armed man.

At the hospital dozens of uniformed and plainclothes officers lined the hallway while other officers held each other as they arrived.
