Red Cross to install smoke, carbon monoxide detectors

A new effort is underway to make one small change that could prevent fires from destroying Bronx homes and businesses.
The American Red Cross is installing combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms for New York City residents free of charge.
The "Get Alarmed NYC" campaign is a joint initiative between the FDNY, the mayor's office and the Red Cross. Volunteers will be going door to door, reaching out to residents about fire safety.
FDNY statistics show that up to 70 percent of fire deaths are in homes without working smoke alarms.
