The Clay Avenue Historic District in Morrisania is among six such areas selected by a citywide advocacy council for extra preservation efforts in 2016.
Among the characteristics that bring charm to the neighborhood are its classic architecture, according to Adrian Untermyer of the Historic Districts Council.
The wealthy Vanderbilt and Rockefeller families were among many who raced horses up and down the block between 165th and 167th streets, Untermyer says.
The Historic Districts Council picks six districts every year as part of its "Six to Celebrate" program.
The chosen districts receive help from the council in ensuring that money and resources go to preserving the historic sites.
The districts will also host block parties, public meetings and other events to raise awareness about their historic value.
