DOT proposes Castle Ave. pedestrian safety plan

The Department of Transportation has a proposal to increase pedestrian safety on Castle Hill Avenue.
The DOT says Castle Hill Avenue is a Vision Zero priority corridor with 28 people killed or severely injured between 2010 and 2014.
The proposal would calm traffic between East Tremont and Westchester avenues and between the Bruckner Expressway and Hart Street. Also included in the plan would be to add one pedestrian island, one curb extension and one refuge expansion, which will provide safer pedestrian crossings, create simpler, safer left turns from cross streets, and reduce motor vehicle and pedestrian conflict. Bike lanes would also be part of the proposal.
Residents who walk in the area on a daily basis say anything the DOT could do to increase safety is a big help.
The DOT says the overall goal is to calm traffic in the area and cut down on pedestrian-related fatalities and injuries.
