Potential rezoning worries Highbridge auto shop

The possible rezoning of a section of Highbridge has left some autoworkers worried about their livelihoods.

Neftali Rafael Fuerte opened C3R Mega Auto Diagnostic seven years ago, and he planned to retire from his business. He says he isn't against rezoning, but he has to keep his business alive.

"Rezoning is good, as long as it benefits us all," he says.

Earlier this year, the Department of City Planning announced plans for housing at Jerome and Cromwell avenues. DCP is also working to finalize a planning study that could determine whether the area is rezoned.

According to Fuerte, the city told him existing businesses would be grandfathered in, but he isn't so certain.

The president of the United Auto Merchants Association in the Bronx, Pedro Estevez, says moving the auto shop to an industrial district could be a solution, if and when the time comes.
