Massive fallen tree smashes cars on Hillman Avenue near Van Cortlandt Park

Several drivers woke up to find that a massive tree came crashing down near Van Cortlandt Village overnight, right on top of their cars.
At least three parked cars were smashed and severely damaged on Hillman Avenue, where neighbors say they heard the tree topple over at around 3:30 a.m.
NYPD crews responded to break apart and remove the giant hollowed tree, but it remains unclear exactly what caused it to fall. The street was closed for several hours, forcing residents to find alternate routes to get to work and school.
Residents complain that a number of trees along the same road fell over last winter. They say they hope the Parks Department takes care of other trees on the block.
No injuries were reported.
