P.S. 202 principal Michael Spencer Edwards accused of assaulting 7-year-old

A school principal in East New York assaulted a 7-year-old student, according to police.
They arrested Michael Spencer Edwards, the principal at P.S. 202 Ernest S. Jenkyns School, Tuesday afternoon.
The victim's mother says her son came home and told her the principal slapped and kicked him.
"He said, 'Mr. Edwards took me to the staircase, and he smacked me in my face," says Shema McKenzie, recounting what her son, Hasheem, told her.
She took pictures of her son's swollen cheek and bruised stomach, injuries she attributed to Edwards.
The incident allegedly happened because Hasheem was wearing a hood in the cafeteria, despite being told not to.
Edwards faces charges of assault and acting in a manner injurious to a child.
The Department of Education says it has removed him from the school and taken him away from student contact.
