Community calls of city to develop vacant lots
Community advocates are calling on the city to develop hundreds of vacant lots in the Bronx.
One lot, located at 1390 Stebbins Ave. has been a site where the homeless gather but they were joined Thursday by residents and elected officials to demand the city begin developing the area.
Organizers say the Bronx is home to at least 368 vacant buildings and 186 vacant lots.
Advocates with the group Picture the Homeless say they want the city to develop more housing not shelters.
The lot on Stebbins Avenue is over 23,000 square feet and has been held by the city for the past three years.
Advocates say a housing development could hold up to 200 people.
