Community cleans up Mount Eden underpass, asks city for help

Neighbors call the East 174th Street underpass along Selwyn Avenue in Mount Eden their "tunnel of trouble," and they're taking their own measures to clean it up as they call on the city to pay more attention there.
The walls are crumbling. There are garbage and graffiti piled up. And neighbors say they've even found feces.
Sidney Flores and activists with Bronx Community Solutions got to work Tuesday painting over the wall and cleaning up trash. But Flores says the city needs to take charge for some repairs.
"It really defaces the area," he says. "There's chunks of the wall that continue falling. Teachers, nurses and children need to walk through here every day."
Nerisa Small, one of those nurses, says the Department of Transportation installed some LED lights that make her walk to Bronx Lebanon Hospital a little safer -- but she wants more done.
"A lot of homeless people are taking up residence here," she says. "At nights when we come down here, we're really scared."
