New construction pops up across Clinton Hill
Construction projects are popping up all throughout the Clinton Hill neighborhood.
The Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership is busy with property owners, business owners and residents as more than a dozen new buildings are slated to be built on or around Myrtle Avenue.
One project stretches for four blocks down Myrtle Avenue and will be a mixture of commercial and residential spaces.
A block away on the corner of Classon and Willoughby avenues, website BKLYNER reports that the rectory of St. Mary's Episcopal Church will be replaced with a 16-story tower. Though the landmarked church will remain, neighbor Zachary Dicks is still worried about the buildings being constructed.
"I think they're coming up one too many at a time," he says. "There needs to be more parks and trees, especially for the kids to play."
As a former construction worker, Dicks says he is also concerned about the dust, pollution and overall environmental effect of the work.
A block from the church, Ramel Bradley has lived in the same house for almost his entire life. He says he's dealing with construction from a new dormitory for the Pratt Institute directly next to his home.
"It's pretty loud, we get a lot of vibrations and stuff like that, but I think it's great for the community," Bradley says.
And it's not just residents who are being affected. Business owners like Ahmad Samhan, who owns a taqueria on Myrtle Avenue, says that dealing with the work has not been easy.
"It's been a difficult road since the changes began," Samhan says. "A lot of us are just trying to survive right now."
While an inconvenience for now, many agree that they hope the influx of new people in the area will benefit local businesses.
