Man accused of shooting 5-year-old held without bail

A judge denied bail Wednesday for the man accused of shooting a 5-year-old boy on his birthday earlier this week.
Michael Quiles, 27, is accused of striking the boy, Jaheen Hunter, with a stray bullet while he was shooting at another man Monday. He faces a charge of attempted murder.
Surveillance video shows two men in an altercation before the shooting, then one in a purple jacket — who police say is Quiles — fleeing the scene.
The video also shows a car speeding off. Police say that was the boy's father rushing him to a hospital.
The child remains hospitalized in critical condition, hooked up to a breathing machine. Prosecutors say the bullet lodged in his brain and damaged three lobes.
Police say Quiles has 10 prior arrests for charges including assault, criminal possession of a weapon and drug possession.
Prosecutors argued that because Quiles had an open bench warrant and was recently paroled he should be remanded without bail. The judge agreed.
He is due back in court on June 9.
