LIRR commuters transfer to Atlantic Terminal for Penn station repairs
Posted: Updated:Some Long Island Rail Road commuters transferred to the Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn Monday amid the beginning of scheduled rail repairs at Pennsylvania Station.
Amtrak was forced to accelerate repairs at the station after several derailments and incidents, which caused major delays over the past few months.
Repair work was supposed to begin over the course of the next few years only on nights and weekends, but has turned into an immediate closure of LIRR tracks at Penn station, according to officials.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has coined the term ‘Summer of Hell’ and openly called on the LIRR to reimburse customers affected by service disruption.
The rail work means less peak trains for LIRR, NJ Transit, and Amtrak riders.
Commuters made their way to the Atlantic terminal Monday, many of them transferring to subways.
The morning commute appeared to be going smooth, according to commuters.
However, one man says he is skeptical of how the afternoon is going to be. A full schedule for repairs is located here.
