A fatal accident in Kingsbridge is leading to new safety measures at a busy intersection.
Neighbors started demanding improved safety measures after a car struck and killed a pedestrian at West 230th Street and Broadway.
The 72-year-old woman was inside the crosswalk when a black Honda turned onto Broadway from Exterior Street and slammed into her.
The Department of Transportation says it will install a new left-turn signal for the eastbound 230th Street approach to the intersection.
"Installation will be completed within the next three weeks," a spokesperson said.
In 2012, the DOT conducted a traffic-calming project near Van Cortlandt Park, reducing total pedestrian injuries by 48 percent.
According to DOT crash data from 2010 to 2014, Broadway still ranks in the top three of Bronx corridors with 8.1 people killed or severely injured per mile - including 6.7 pedestrians.
"It is clear that we need to do more for traffic safety on Broadway," City Councilman Andrew Cohen says. "Members of our community shouldn't be afraid to cross the street. I am going to advocate for better traffic safety.
