A week after Sabrett recalled over 7 million of pounds of hot dogs and sausages over concerns of bones in some products, one Brooklyn man says the company needs to do more for its loyal customers.
Ladwin Brissett, of East New York, says he has been living a nightmare. The 52-year-old claims it started when he took a bite of a hot dog and found pieces of bone and cartilage. He showed News 12 cuts to his mouth and throat, and he is now taking medication for a cracked tooth.
Brissett says he believes that if people like him had not sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration, Sabrett would have done nothing.
"I just think they just don't care," Brissett says. "They were trying to sweep it under the table...to hide the fact that their product had injured a customer."
He says it's still painful to eat about a month later, but what made his experience even worse is the response he got from the company. A week after telling Sabrett about the bone pieces in his hot dog, he received a letter in return that said, "We are enclosing a refund check of $25 for your trouble and sincerely hope you will use it to try our product again."
Sabrett did not respond to News 12's multiple requests for comment. The United States Department of Agriculture issued a release on July 15 but did not offer additional details.
In the meantime, Brissett says he wants an apology.
"For you to look at me and send me a check for $25 and the letter says for your problems, I'm just wondering where they're coming from," he says.
Brissett also says he won't be buying Sabrett's products anytime soon.
