Fordham Road commuters frustrated by ‘blocking the box’ law

Posted: Updated:
FORDHAM -

Fordham Road commuters say they feel like they’re being trapped by a law that tickets them for “blocking the box.”

The law being called into question is related to what’s called “spillback” or “blocking the box,” which means drivers can’t cross an intersection unless they know they can clear it.

Drivers say getting stuck in the middle of an intersection is inevitable during rush hour on Fordham Road, an offense that will cost more than $100 if caught by traffic agents.

Abassi Muhammad, a Fordham Road business owner, says he sees drivers getting caught often, and worries that it drives business away from the area.

The rule is nothing new: from June 2016 through June of this year, 87 tickets have been issued for the offense.
