Residents with family in Caribbean worry about Irma's impact

WEST FARMS -

Bronx residents with family in the Caribbean say they are worried about Hurricane Irma's impact on the island nations.

Irma was slamming the Caribbean Wednesday as a Category 5 storm, packing catastrophically powerful winds and with flooding impacting millions in its path. Irma is the largest hurricane recorded in the Atlantic Ocean.

President Donald Trump has issued an emergency declaration for Puerto Rico, which hasn't seen a storm like Irma since Hurricane San Felipe in 1928.

Nestor Renzas manages Taino Mayor Records on East Tremont Avenue in the Bronx. The shop shows how deep his Puerto Rican roots run. Having lived in Puerto Rico for many years, he returned to the U.S. three years ago and took over the family business last year.

Renzas says he's now worried for the majority of his family, who still lives in Puerto Rico. His parents just returned to the island on Monday. They live on the southern part, not in the direct path of Irma, but Renzas is still concerned. He says they plan on helping out others in the nation by providing shelter and supplies.

Renzas also says he was in Puerto Rico when Hurricane George hit in 1998. The worst part, he says, was the aftermath and that it took months to get basic necessities like electricity, water and phone lines back up and running.
