NYPD: Man killed by police brandished 'imitation gun'

Posted: Updated:

Police went to an Eastchester apartment Wednesday night to check on the tenant there, but when the man inside brandished a knife and a fake pistol, officers shot and killed him, according to authorities.

The landlord had not seen or heard from the tenant at 3700 Pratt Ave. in "some time," according to police. He called officers and led them to a third-floor apartment.

Police say they found the 31-year-old tenant inside when the landlord opened the door. He was holding a knife in his left hand and had his right hand concealed behind his back, they say.

Body cameras from multiple officers recorded the incident, police say, although the video has not yet been released.

Additional officers arrived, one of whom had a Taser, according to authorities. At that time, police noticed an item in the man's concealed hand that appeared to be a gun.

Police say the officers asked him multiple times whether it was a real gun. They told him to drop it and tried to explain that they did not want to hurt him.

After a few minutes of dialogue, the man raised the gun, police say. One officer fired the Taser. Two others fired their service weapons, striking the man multiple times, killing him.

Police showed images of the knife and what they called an imitation gun they found at the scene. The blade was an open, black folding knife. The gun had a red laser sight mounted on the top.

None of the officers were hurt.

The man's identity was being withheld pending notification of his relatives.
