Leaky roof pushes Bronx tenant to build makeshift catch basin

THE BRONX -

A Bronx tenant claims he was forced to construct a makeshift catch basin on the ceiling of his Allerton apartment after numerous complaints to building management about what he says is a constant leak.

John Nunez and his mother-in-law say the ceiling has been leaking on and off in their apartment for three years. They say they aren't sure of the source of the leak, but say they were told by a building repairman that it may be due to a roofing problem.

"I got Gorilla Glue and I took a pan from the $.99 store, so there's three leaks spread apart from each other," he says. "The water falls into the pan, then I cut a hole here. I made a funnel and it funnels out the window."

Maria Serrano, 54, is disabled and has asthma. She claims repairs to the ceiling have been inadequate.

News 12 was asked to leave by a housing supervisor upon visiting the building's management office.

Later Tuesday, a representative from the New York City Housing Authority contacted News 12, saying it would be sending work crews to the apartment to inspect and fix the ceiling.
