Group pushes DOT for Grand Concourse safety changes

Nonprofit organization Transportation Alternatives is pushing the city Department of Transportation to make safety changes on the Grand Concourse.
The group says it has been pushing an initiative for three years to make the roadway safer. At least 13 people have been killed since 2012 as a result of dangerous conditions on the Concourse, according to Transportation Alternatives, and thousands more were hurt.
The group’s plan includes bike lanes and a bus lane that would make it safer for pedestrians and motivate people to use alternate modes of transportation.
Transportation Alternatives will be rallying in support of that vision at 6 p.m. Thursday on East 161st Street and Grand Concourse.
News 12 reached out to the DOT about the bike and bus lanes, and the agency says there are no current plans to implement those.
