A man was sentenced Friday for a 2015 crash that killed a 7-year-old boy in Pelham Bay.
Kwasi Oduro walked into court hiding his face behind a hat, looking down. Police say the 75-year-old left the scene of a crime after slamming into a restaurant.
Surveillance video showed Oduro slamming into the front of the business at Westchester and Colonial avenues, killing 7-year-old Ethan Villavicencio, who was eating with his father and sister at the time.
Ethan's sister and father were not in court Friday, but an extended portion of the family was, including his mother, Natasha Villavicencio. In a statement read on her behalf, she said no sentencing would replace the loss of her son and, despite Oduro's apology, she said she wasn't pleased with the verdict.
Oduro was sentenced to five years' probation and court fees. During that time, he will not be allowed to drive any type of motor vehicle.
