Program helps underprivileged kids take part in sports

A group of underprivileged children started their weekend off with some sports at the In-Tech Academy on Tibbett Avenue.
The United Chaplains State of New York Athletic League helped put the program together for students ages 14-19. The eight-week program gives kids a chance to participate in extracurricular activities.
The coaches who serve as mentors to the kids are members of the NYPD, FDNY, EMP and chaplains.
The kids involved not only got to have fun, but they also got to hear inspiring stories from people who went through obstacles to get to where they are today.
Saturday's guest mentors included Mialenny Santos, a model who lost her arm in a car accident; Fausto Montano, who lost his father at 8 years old, but now owns a fashion line; and Jada Gill, a music video director.
Victor Matos, a 15-year NYPD veteran and chaplain, helped to organize the day's events.
"It's awesome, giving back to the community, showing the community and the youth that we care," Matos said. "All the off-duty officers, EMS workers come together as one big family."
