Bronx residents call for full accessibility at Parkchester subway station

PARKCHESTER -

An action group made themselves heard Monday as they demanded accessibility at one of the Bronx's busiest subway stops.

The group Rise and Resist staged the "Roll In," where at at least two-dozen residents called for elevators at the Parkchester 6 train station, which local leaders say is the Bronx's third-busiest station.

Protesters say the station underwent a $100 million renovation less than 10 years ago, but no elevators were installed.

Using signs and chants, they voiced their displeasure with the MTA and demanded an elevator.

"I'm protesting because we don't have an elevator here. The escalator doesn't work half the time," said protester Bertha Arnold. "I'm a senior citizen. I'm 80 years old, I live here in Parkchester and it's very difficult for me to get into Manhattan or any place else where I have to go by subway."

The MTA says the layout of the Parkchester station means that the addition of elevators would require a complete rebuild of the entire station, at the cost of hundreds of millions of dollars and disrupted service for years.
