Volunteers on Friday sorted through and packed up a gym full of supplies heading to Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
The nonprofit Catholic Charities has taken in the supplies from 56 parishes throughout Brooklyn and Queens.
Volunteer Gloria Felix says her cousins on the island tell her that the need for relief remains great, as they continue to live without clean water and electricity.
Jennie Melendez also has family in Puerto Rico and says she looked for any opportunity to give back.
"We take so many things for granted," she says. "It's like you're leaving the water faucet on and all of a sudden that little drop is helping somebody."
For the past week, donations have poured in from parishes and were collected in Douglaston, Queens. The packages will be meticulously labeled before heading to Puerto Rico to help Catholic Charities' sister agency in San Juan, Carita, distribute the items.
