P.S. 583 in Soundview holds official ribbon cutting ceremony

The Soundview community officials opened its newest school.
Children started attending P.S. 583 on White Plains Road at the beginning of the school year, but Friday was the school's formal grand opening.
Chancellor Carmen Farina and other elected officials were on hand for the ribbon cutting,
Farina laid out her expectation for the Bronx Lab School for Historical Discovery.
The school, in partnership with the New York Historical Society, hopes to promote dedication to research and history.
The building also includes state of the art facilities like a rooftop garden and science labs.
Farina says a school like this can have a big impact on the community.
"I think having a beautiful new building in any place is really inspiring. It says we believe in you as a community. We think there's a lot of new things happening here. The principal told me already she was able to fully subscribe all the classes that she has. But if I lived across the street from this school I’d say OK, this is a community up and coming, we believe in them and there for it makes them feel better," said Farina.
