ShopRite and Sen. Jeff Klein gave away free turkeys Monday for tenants who have been without a nearby supermarket.
The turkeys were given out in Bruckner Plaza to residents of the Sack Wern Houses and Clason Point Gardens.
“We have to thank ShopRite. Glad they’re coming to the neighborhood. We don’t have a supermarket right now,” said Loretta Masterson, of the Sack Wern Houses.
Residents have been waiting for a supermarket to come to the plaza since October 2015, when Key Food closed.
A ShopRite spokeswoman said the new store will open in the plaza in mid-2018. Residents told News 12 they were told the store was supposed to open by early 2017. ShopRite officials refused to comment on why there have been delays.
News 12 contacted Urban Edge Properties, the owner of Bruckner Plaza, on why there have been delays to the opening of the new ShopRite but has not yet received a response.
Residents said they are looking forward to the opening of the supermarket and hope the donated turkeys are just a taste of what’s to come.
